The 56th International Children's Games (ICG) in 2024 was held from July 15 to
20 in León, Mexico. During the event, representatives from the Sports Administration and the Ministry of
Education, traveled to León to assist Hualien County in presenting their bid proposal at the ICG Executive Committee meeting. Following the presentation, Hualien County was officially awarded the hosting rights for the 58th ICG in 2026.
The ICG is an international sports organization recognized by the International
Olympic Committee (IOC). The Games are held annually and are open to athletes aged 12 to 15, with cities representing the competing delegations. To date, the event has been held 56 times. The Sports Administration places
great importance on Taiwan's participation in the ICG and supports local governments each year in
organizing teams to compete, while also encouraging them to bid for hosting rights. Taipei City (2002) and
New Taipei City (2016) have previously hosted the Games, both earning widespread praise from participating
countries.
In 2023, after Hualien County submitted its Letter of Intent to host the 2026 ICG
at the ICG in Daegu, South Korea, the Sports Administration began actively assisting Hualien with
its bidding efforts. Over the past year, multiple coordination meetings were convened by Hualien County, and
in March 2024, ICG Executive Committee members were invited to Hualien to conduct on-site inspections of the proposed venues. The committee members unanimously commended Hualien's facilities and preparations. In
addition, Ms. Chang Fen-Fen, member of the ICG Executive Committee, and Ms. Hsu Hsiu-Ling, Head of the
Division of International and Cross-Strait Sports of the Sports Administration, represented Taiwan in key
ICG organizational meetings as Executive Committee Member and Committee Member of the ICG, respectively. They played
crucial roles in monitoring the latest organizational developments and lobbying for support from other
ICG members for Taiwan's bid to host the Games again.
The 2025 ICG will be held in Tallinn, Estonia. During that event, Hualien County is
expected to officially sign an agreement with the ICG, marking the formal start of the 2026
Hualien ICG preparations. The Sports Administration will continue to fully support Hualien County in
organizing the Games, with hopes that the event will broaden the international perspective of Taiwanese youth,
enhance cross-cultural exchanges with athletes from other countries, and showcase the unique cultures of Hualien and Taiwan to the world. It is also expected to boost the city's visibility and further
strengthen Taiwan's participation and influence within the ICG.
